Colacril, Vitopel and Braskem present sustainable solution in self-adhesive labels.

January, 31, 2012 - The Green Liner joint project, developed by Colacril, Vitopel and Braskem since May, 2011 with the purpose of introducing an environmentaly sustainable option in self-adhesive labels coupled with a reverse logistic program, has gained traction with the conclusion of its product life cycle.

Green Line has a focus on sustainability in all stages and was designed so that the concept was taken into account since the initial production of the liner and the self-adhesive until the moment of its return for recycling. In addition, it meets the requirements of PNRS - Brazilian National Policy on Solid Waste, as it reduces the waste volume and presents a solution for recycling, taking into consideriration the responsibility shared by all links in the chain.

The proper disposal of liners has always been a challenge for manufacturers and users of self-adhesives. The solution was to develop a sustainable product in BOPP film (bioriented polypropylene), which has properties that facilitate its recycling. Thus, the user can forward BOPP self-adhesive liners for the manufacture of new plastic products - these products may be new labels or even a new liner. This process allows those who utilize self-adhesive labels to close the product use cycle (cradle to cradle).

The analysis of the product life cycle demonstrated the environmental benefits of Green Line, especially when it comes to reducing emission of greenhouse gases and solid waste when compared with market traditional solutions. Companies which join the project will be guaranteed traceability and quantification of environmental benefits generated, allowing for the calculation of earnings in sustainability goals of partner companies.

Companies participating in the project:

Colacril, the largest manufacturer of self-adhesives in Latin America, envisioned Green Liner as a way to meet the constant demands of the market for products with better performance, economic competitiveness, but that also take into account the aspects of sustainability.

Vitopel is a BOPP producer with a production capacity of 127.000 tons a year, ranked among the five largest BOPP companies in the world. A global company with offices in Argentina, Brazil and the US, Vitopel may soon turn Green Liner into Vitopaper ®, which is a synthetic paper made of various types of recycled plastics, with 100% Brazilian technology.

Braskem, the leader company in the production of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and the largest world producer of biopolymers, has the strategic vision of becoming the global leader in sustainable chemistry in 2020.
