Braskem launches a seal for its products made from renewable sources

Braskem is about to become world leader in the production of biopolymers when it puts in operation its first industrial plant for green ethylene in the middle of next semester. The plant will make it possible to produce 200 thousand tons/year of polyethylene from sugar cane ethanol. Now the company takes yet another step towards its commitment to sustainability by launching the I’m Green seal. The objective is to create value and to identify all of its polymers produced from renewable raw materials.

The seal was designed to be simple and straightforward in communicating with the diverse publics and it was conceived to add more value to client products. "With the creation of the seal, we are extending the benefits of using a resin from a renewable source to the final consumer who sees and valorizes products with renewable components," explains Rui Chammas, vice-president of the Polymers Unit.

This initiative reinforces Braskem’s commitment to creating value through sustainable development for the sector's production chain, its clients and society, which are increasingly more demanding in adopting practices that aim at contributing towards reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

"For every ton of green polyethylene produced, up to 2.5 tons of CO2 are sequestered," underscores Jorge Soto, director of Sustainable Development at Braskem. "Renewable source plastic is part of Braskem’s commitment to the production chain and all of society in the search for sustainable solutions."

Development of the seal, which is self-referencing and does not have any cultural barriers, highlights the identity of products that have a relationship with nature in their essence, while also transferring value to the brand and the consumer who seeks to include the practice of sustainable consumption in their day-to-day activities.

Besides green polyethylene, the I'm Green seal will also identify other resins Braskem comes to develop from predominantly renewable sources. By the start of operations of the new ethylene plant using ethanol as a raw material, the company shall define, together with its clients, the conditions for them to also use the seal on their products, especially showing the minimum content of green resin in the composition.

Since its launch in 2007, Braskem's polyethylene produced from sugar cane ethanol has already attracted attention from companies around the world, all interested in associating their brands to the biopolymer. As a result, a great part of this production has already been contracted by clients in Brazil and abroad. Another advantage of green polyethylene is that the industry of plastic manufactured products will not need to make any investment in new equipment since it has the same performance and properties as resin produced from non-renewable raw materials.

For this project to become reality, Braskem is investing nearly R$ 500 million in the green ethylene plant alone, which is in final construction phases in Triunfo, RS, demonstrating the company's confidence in the growth of this market based on products from renewable sources.ter – only filtered and to be used basically for maintenance services.
