Dow Announces a New ‘Star’ in LLDPE Resins for Packaging Markets

The company says the new family of resins is unmatched in stiffness-toughness balance, with improved processing and sustainability profiles

October, 27, 2015 - The Dow Chemical Company’s Packaging and Specialty Plastics business announced today the launch of INNATE™ Precision Packaging Resins, a new family of LLDPE resins. The company claims that it offers unprecedented performance levels and will help customers address some of today’s most challenging packaging performance gaps. Created from a patented molecular catalyst coupled with advanced process technology, INNATE will empower customers to unlock new packaging opportunities through unmatched stiffness-toughness balance, processing ease and improved sustainability profiles, says the Midland-based resin manufacturer.

“INNATE resins were developed as a result of many discussions with converters and brand owners and careful analysis of the market trends,” said Diego Donoso, business president for Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics (www.dowpackaging.com), “We’re excited about what INNATE™ will enable in future packaging design.”

Added David Parrillo, global R&D director for Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, “The chemistry behind INNATE resins allows customers to control properties like never before to create a new standard of performance through a combination of film stiffness, toughness and processability, all from one packaging resin.”

Dow says that INNATE will help define new market spaces and create new categories for everything from flexible food packaging to heavy-duty industrial shipping sacks. According to the company, its INNATE resins offer:

  • Very good sustainability profiles due to light-weighting potential
  • Opportunities for new packaging efficiencies through material substitution
  • Up to twice the abuse resistance in co-extruded films compared to tested standard polyethylene resins on the market
  • Film toughness without compromising stiffness and other key properties
  • Processing ease with excellent bubble stability

“INNATE Precision Packaging Resins were born from a breakthrough, patented catalyst and process technology and gives brand owners, retailers and converters what they’re demanding: the ability to create precision combinations that deliver high performing food, consumer and industrial packages,” said Nestor de Mattos, marketing director for Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics. “INNATE™ is a real star in packaging resin technology.”
