Braskem Siam chooses Japanese company Toyo Engineering as FEED contractor for bio-based ethylene plant in Thailand

It will be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and is set to produce bio-based polyethylene to support regional and global growing demand

November, 7, 2024 - Braskem Siam Company Limited, the joint venture of Braskem, leading global biopolymer producer, and SCG Chemicals, one of the largest petrochemical companies in Asia, has awarded the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for its plant in Thailand to Toyo Engineering Corporation. Established in 1961, Toyo brings crucial expertise in the field as well as the region to the project.

The plant will produce bio-ethylene from sugarcane-based ethanol, a renewable feedstock, through the EtE Evergreen process technology licensed by Lummus and Braskem B.V. Such bio-ethylene will be converted into I'm green bio-based polyethylene.

With a negative carbon footprint, the bio-Ethylene will be produced from a Carbon that comes from CO2 from the atmosphere (photosynthesis). This plant-based solution is an important route to replace fossil feedstock and fight Climate Change in a large portfolio of applications, for example food packaging, safety equipment and footwear.

The FEED is one important step of the feasibility study, where Capex and Execution Schedule are defined, to support the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the project in Thailand. Toyo will contribute with the experience in Thailand as well as construction of ethylene plants, being another regional player to join the efforts for the expansion of the sustainable plastic market into Southeast Asia, noted for its growing demand.

Walmir Soller, Braskem Vice President for Europe & Asia, reiterates the significance of this local partnership: "We are happy to have the knowledge and experience of Toyo on this project that will be a milestone for the bio-polyethylene growth as a sustainable alternative for Brand Owners and Retailers that are looking for scalable and reliable solutions"

Eiji Hosoi, President and CEO of Toyo Engineering Corporation, emphasized the importance of this project in advancing sustainability goals:

"We are honored to be part of this groundbreaking initiative, which aligns perfectly with Toyo's mission of 'Engineering for Sustainable Growth of the Global Community.' By leveraging our expertise in plant engineering and collaborating with Braskem Siam, we aim to drive innovation in bio-based ethylene production, contributing not only to the reduction of carbon footprints but also to the realization of a circular economy. This project underscores our commitment to fostering a carbon-neutral society and supporting sustainable development in Southeast Asia and beyond."
